I am currently on season 6 of Supernatural--specifically, I am on season 6, episode 5, "Live Free and Twihard," but that's not what this unhinged rant is about.

Anyone who is invested to any degree in Wincest as a ship could rattle off at least a handful of scenes where both Sam and Dean act less like brothers and more like two people dancing around their mutually-known and mutually-repressed feelings towards each other. It feels like every episode of the show has at least one of these moments, or in some cases (looking at you, "Mint Condition") multiple instances. In the first half of the series, at the very least, it feels like a lot of this flirting is coming from Dean's end--Dean makes a comment that would raise the eyebrows of any eavesdropper within ten feet, Sam rolls his eyes, laughs, maybe looks uncomfortable, and the episode marches on.

While a lot of these instances could be chalked up to our inability to take the shipping goggles off no matter the circumstance, I can't help but take these lines as a deeper indication of Dean's irreparably damaged view of relationships. Sam is the most important person in his life, the writers never let you forget that Dean would watch the entire world burn if it meant Sam was standing beside him, and while there is incestuous subtext between Dean and his entire direct family, the majority of this subtext comes from his interactions with Sam. His world is Sammy, his life is Sammy, Dean's entire mental state hinges of Sam being alive and well. That's just what one half of a codependent relationship's inner world will look like regardless of any other underlying, taboo predilections that might exist within that person, but with Dean it seems to go so much further than just codependency.

Dean seems incapable of knowing when to stop. He loves Sam, so he makes jokes and comments about him that are only socially acceptable between unrelated individuals, and he never gets tired of making these jokes even when it seems like there's no ground left uncovered. There's a persistence that goes beyond brotherly teasing.

At this point I'm just thinking out loud, but I think Dean has a fixation on what he can't have. Be it his self-loathing tearing him down and making him believe he's unlovable or making weird comments about the younger version of his own mother (and the almost-relationship with a woman who was originally written to be his half-sister, but that's neither here nor there), I think Dean is drawn to the idea of what's forbidden to him, and what is more forbidden to him than having a non-platonic interest in his own brother? His inability to stop himself from saying worse and worse things until he finally drives those he loves away (#relatable, as the kids of last decade would say) and his sexual and romantic fixations on people he cannot have would only reach a fever pitch when applied to the person he loves most, and the biggest target of his jeering.

Sam and Dean grew up in a situation where they were never allowed much privacy, and while I feel Sam turned out pretty average for having grown up in that situation, Dean's developing brain seems to have crossed a few wires when it comes to Sam. There are no boundaries with him (save for having healthy discussions about emotions, but I blame that on the toxic masculinity), and I'd argue that in Dean's brain, Sam serves the same functions a romantic partner would--closest confidante, best friend, occasional sparring partner, and someone who you can smack on the ass and call "honey."

These are just my half-baked thoughts, but this is how a lot of my fics start, so I'm basically jotting all of this down for when I want to write another Dean character study. I doubt this made any sense to anybody else, but that's cool--thank you for reaching this point anyway!
